Why This Website Exists

A hand extended. Not a hand out — a hand up. This is why Robert Carey built Hopium Island, and why helping service business owners succeed is not just a business — it is a mission.

There are a lot of great people out there running small businesses and service companies. Hardworking, dedicated people who wake up early, stay late, sacrifice weekends, and pour everything they have into making their companies work. They are plumbers and electricians, auto repair shop owners, contractors, landscapers, cleaning companies, medical practices, and dozens of other trades and services that keep this country running.

And the world has failed them.

Not because they lack talent. Not because they lack work ethic. The world has failed them because nobody ever taught them how to run a business. They know their trade. They are exceptional at what they do. But knowing how to fix an engine, wire a building, or manage a crew is not the same thing as knowing how to read a profit and loss statement, price a job correctly, manage cash flow, or build systems that let the business run without them being there every single minute of every single day.

I believe there are tools that can help these owners not just get by, not just survive, not just struggle from paycheck to paycheck — but actually do well. Thrive. Build something that gives them the life they originally went into business to create.

Why Did You Go Into Business?

Think about it. Why did you start your company? Be honest with yourself.

More flexible time

You wanted to control your schedule, be there for the things that matter, and stop answering to someone else's clock.

More money

You wanted financial freedom — not just a paycheck, but real wealth that rewards your effort and risk.

More family time

You wanted to go to your kids' games, have date nights, take real vacations — not two-day trips, but four-week getaways.

Freedom and independence

You wanted to build something of your own. Something you controlled. Something that reflected your vision.

And how is that working out?

If you are like most service business owners, you are not getting any of that right now. You are working more hours than you ever did at a job. You have less free time. The money is tight. And the freedom you dreamed about feels further away than ever.

You Do Not Own a Company. You Own a Job.

Let us talk about what a job really stands for: Just Over Broke.

With all the work you put in, all the effort, all the sacrifice — you are still just getting by. And what most owners do not realize is that they do not just have one boss anymore. They have three.

Your Three Bosses

1

The IRS

They take their cut before you see a dime. Quarterly estimates, payroll taxes, income taxes — they are always first in line.

2

The Bank

Loans, lines of credit, equipment financing — the bank gets paid whether you had a good month or not.

3

Your Crazy Uncle (The Economy)

Inflation, recessions, supply chain disruptions, interest rates — the economy does not care about your business plan. It does what it does, and you have to deal with it.

The Old Man and the Lesson That Changed Everything

A long time ago, when I owned an auto repair shop, an older gentleman came to see me. He asked a simple question: "Are you successful?"

I said, "Yeah, I'm very successful."

He said, "Let's go."

"I can't leave," I told him. "The store is running. I have to be here."

He looked at me and said, "You're not successful."

"Here's my business. My granddaughter came to me, excited about getting ice cream. All I did was put my pen down, walk up to my manager, and say, 'I'll be back in two days.' I didn't tell him what to do or how to do it — because the systems and processes are already in place. I know what's going on in my business. As a matter of fact, I'm also working on other businesses because I set it up correctly. I'm generating multiple streams of income."

That moment changed everything for me. That is what real success looks like. Not being chained to your business. Not being the only person who can do everything. Real success is building something that works whether you are there or not. It is called absentee ownership, and it is what every business owner should be working toward.

Why I Built This Website

I have been through it. All of it. I have worked in corporate America. I have owned my own businesses. I have dealt with emergencies, mergers, and selling companies. I have made every mistake you can make. Trial and error, over and over again.

I am a proud graduate of Purdue University — Boiler Up — and if you read through our articles, you will notice a lot of references to Purdue research and Purdue business publications. That is not an accident. Purdue's approach to business education is practical, research-driven, and grounded in real-world application — which is exactly how I approach coaching. I reference what I trust, and I trust where I learned.

After working with service business owners across many trades, I can tell you this: most of the pain business owners go through is unnecessary. Not because they are doing it wrong on purpose, but because nobody showed them the right way. Nobody gave them the tools. Nobody walked beside them and said, "Here — do this, avoid that, and here is how to get there faster."

That is what Hopium Island is. It is a hand extended — not a handout, but a hand up. I built this website to offer the basic tools, the knowledge, the resources, and the consulting assistance to help service business owners be successful. Through strategic partnerships, proven systems, and real-world experience, I can help your business grow.

This Is Not a Seminar

If you want to go to a seminar, go to a seminar. I have been to plenty. And I will tell you exactly what happens: you get excited, you buy the book, you go home fired up — and then the book sits on the shelf and gets dusty. Been there. Done that.

What I offer is different. I provide ongoing coaching. Not life coaching — if you need that, there is a chair for you somewhere. I am talking about profit coaching.

What Profit Coaching Means

  • How do you become profitable?
  • What do you do to become consistently profitable?
  • How do you run a company whether you are there or not?
  • How do you build systems that let the business operate without you?
  • How do you create multiple streams of income?
  • How do you get your time back — for your family, for yourself, for living?

Knowledge Is Not Power

Let me tell you why.

If I gave you a map showing where one million dollars in gold was buried, but you never dug it up — did that map do you any good? The answer is no.

All the information in the world, all the seminars, all the books, all the podcasts — none of it matters if you do not implement it. And implementation is hard. Especially when you are trying to do it alone, without someone guiding you, holding you accountable, and showing you how to execute.

Knowledge is not power. Implementation is power. And having someone who has already been through it, guiding you through it — that is the shortcut most business owners never find.

That is where I come in. I help you execute. I congratulate you when you deserve it. I push you when you need it. And I help you build the kind of business — and the kind of life — that you originally intended when you took the leap.

Do Not Waste Your Premium Years

As the days go by, you are spending your best years struggling. Years you could be spending with your family. Years you could be taking real vacations — not two-day trips to the next town over, but real trips. Four weeks somewhere beautiful with the people you love. You deserve it.

Yes, you have to work hard. That never changes. But working hard and working smart are two different things. I have spent years learning through trial and error, through consulting over a thousand companies, through building and selling businesses of my own. Why go through all of that yourself when you can benefit from someone who has already made the mistakes, found the answers, and built the systems?

Why not get the shortcuts now, from somebody who has already been through it, and get it done correctly?
